About Holiday Hangups
I grew up in a family where the women went all out for Christmas. We didn't just put up a tree—we created a whole experience.
My parents were even married on Christmas Day. And years later, I got married on Christmas Day, too.
So it's probably not surprising that I've always loved Christmas. But it wasn't until I moved to Plano, Texas, about 15 years ago that I discovered a whole new side of Christmas decorating.
That's when I found a designer Christmas store unlike anything I'd ever experienced.
Every year, the store was filled with incredible Christmas trees that were creative, unexpected and spectacular. They weren't ordinary Christmas trees. They were works of art.
I remember walking through the store thinking that I wanted to live there.
But more than that, I wanted to create that same feeling in my own home—and share that magic with my children.
The problem was, where do you find the things that create that look?
I was already decorating Christmas trees, but most of the decorations I owned had come from places like Hobby Lobby and Target. They were perfectly fine, but they weren't the same as the products I was seeing in that designer Christmas store.
The difference was often scale, quality and design.
The ornaments were larger. The ribbon was beautiful and substantial, with patterns and fabrics that could be shaped and formed exactly where I wanted them. The specialty pieces had more impact.
I began to realize that creating an extraordinary Christmas tree wasn't just about knowing how to decorate.
It was about having access to the right products.
And I started wondering about all the people who didn't have a designer Christmas store anywhere near them.
That's where the idea for Holiday Hangups began.
From Mom Can Do Anything to Holiday Hangups
Before Holiday Hangups existed, I had a DIY and lifestyle blog called Mom Can Do Anything. I loved creating things for my home and sharing the projects with other women who wanted to make their homes more beautiful and personal.
Eventually, Christmas became a big part of what I was sharing.
I started posting my Christmas trees, decorating ideas and holiday projects, and the response was bigger than I expected. People wanted to know where I found the things I was using, how I created the trees, and how they could recreate the look in their own homes.
That's when I realized there was an opportunity to do more than just show people what I was decorating.
I could help them find the products to create it themselves.
In 2021, I launched Holiday Hangups as an online Christmas decorating business.
My goal was simple: bring the experience of a designer Christmas store to people who don't have one nearby.
I wanted Holiday Hangups to be a place where you could find the beautiful ribbon, oversized ornaments, picks, specialty decor and Christmas lights that make it possible to create something truly special at home.
Why I Started With Christmas Lights
When I started Holiday Hangups, I knew I wanted to begin with Christmas lights because I believe beautiful lighting is the foundation of a beautiful Christmas tree.
For years, I had used RAZ snake lights on my own trees. I loved the small LED lights, the way they looked on the tree, and the fact that they didn't take up a lot of space. They were also incredibly long-lasting. Some of the RAZ lights I bought years ago are still working today.
They became especially useful when the lights built into some of my pre-lit trees eventually stopped working. Instead of replacing the entire tree, I could use snake lights to create beautiful lighting again.
But I also knew there were things I wanted my lights to do that weren't available at the time.
So I decided to design my own.
Designing lights for the way I actually decorate
I wanted my lights to be connectable, so I could connect strands together for larger trees. I wanted a warm white that was bright and beautiful but still warm. I wanted the ability to dim the lights.
And I really wanted a slow twinkle.
A lot of people wanted twinkling Christmas lights, but most of the twinkle settings I was seeing were much too fast for the look I wanted. I wanted something subtle—a gentle sparkle that would add movement and magic to a tree without becoming distracting.
I spent a lot of time working through the different settings to get the effect I had in mind.
The result was the first Holiday Hangups snake light, designed around the way I actually decorate my trees.
Then I discovered how much I loved using cluster lights, too. When I started showing the 50-foot cluster lights I was using on my trees, people responded enthusiastically. That led me to develop a Holiday Hangups cluster light with the same philosophy and features as my snake lights.
I don't just sell Christmas lights. I use them. I design with them. And I pay attention to the little details that make a difference when you're standing in front of a Christmas tree trying to make it beautiful.
How I Choose What Goes on Holiday Hangups
I don't choose products for Holiday Hangups by simply looking through a catalog and picking things that I think might sell.
I choose the things I want to decorate with.
Every year, I go to market looking for what's new in Christmas decorating. I'm watching for trends my customers and audience might love, but I'm also looking for things that are genuinely different—new ideas, innovative lighting and technology, beautiful products I haven't seen before, and pieces that inspire me to create an entire design around them.
And when I find something I love, I want to know how it actually works.
I personally select every product that goes on HolidayHangups.com, and I decorate, test and use almost everything I sell.
That's important to me because I don't want Holiday Hangups to be a giant catalog of Christmas products.
I want it to be a collection of products I've actually chosen and would use in my own home.
Whether it's a beautiful piece of designer ribbon, an oversized ornament, a unique floral pick or a new kind of Christmas light, I'm thinking about how it will look on a tree, how it can be used with other products, and whether it can help someone create something that feels a little more special and unexpected.
That's the same way I shop for my own Christmas decorating.
And it's the way I want to help you shop, too.
A Christmas Business in Plano, Texas
Holiday Hangups is based right here in Plano, Texas—the place where this whole idea began.
When you order from HolidayHangups.com, your products aren't coming from a giant fulfillment center somewhere across the country. We keep inventory here in Plano and ship orders within two business days.
Lisa works with me at our warehouse, where she carefully packs and ships your orders. I also keep our collection of designer ribbons at home and ship those orders myself.
It's a little unconventional, but I like it that way.
Holiday Hangups is still a hands-on business. I'm selecting the products, decorating with them, testing them, photographing them, creating content about them and talking to the people who shop with us.
That connection to the products—and to the people who use them—is one of the things I value most about Holiday Hangups.
Bringing the Designer Christmas Store to You
I started Holiday Hangups because I wanted to recreate the feeling I had when I walked into that designer Christmas store in Plano for the first time.
That feeling of being completely inspired.
Of seeing something unexpected and thinking, I want to create that.
Not everyone has a designer Christmas store nearby. But I believe everyone should have access to beautiful products that can help them create something extraordinary in their own home.
That's what I want Holiday Hangups to be.
A place where you can find the designer ribbon, oversized ornaments, beautiful lights, picks, florals and specialty pieces that can transform an ordinary Christmas tree into something that feels completely your own.
And maybe, when you see one of my trees, you'll get that same feeling I had all those years ago.
That Christmas-morning excitement.
Only now, you get to create the magic yourself.
